The Story Behind the Record

Daniel Escobar reported completing a 52.36 km flat-water loop ride on a Waydoo EVO using a single stock 2.3 kWh battery. He began with the battery at 100 percent and returned to his starting location with 1 percent remaining.

Escobar reported approximately 2 hours and 50 minutes of flight time, or 3 hours and 9 minutes including checkpoint stops. His average speed was approximately 18.5 km/h, with reported average power consumption of approximately 700 watts. He crossed the 50 km point with 6 percent battery remaining.

The equipment consisted of a Waydoo EVO, stock 2.3 kWh production battery, Glider 1500 front wing, 35-inch mast, EfoilSolutions streamlined propeller, and a shroud-free 3D-printed streamlined cone. The rider’s reported total riding weight was approximately 70 kg, including his flotation vest, shoes, and water bottle.

The route was described as a flat-water loop that finished at its starting point. Conditions included variable wind and light chop. Escobar stated that calmer conditions could potentially have added approximately another 2 km, but only the completed and documented distance of 52.36 km is recognized.

Rules of the Beast

The attempt must use a stock, unmodified production battery, battery-management system, motor controller or ESC, motor, and associated power-delivery electronics that were publicly available for purchase by ordinary customers on the date of the attempt.

The battery cells, battery enclosure, internal wiring, connectors, battery-management system, voltage limits, current limits, temperature limits, reserve capacity, usable capacity, low-battery behavior, and shutdown thresholds may not be altered.

The motor, motor windings, rotor, stator, internal cooling system, gearbox, and internal drive components may not be modified. The motor must operate within the manufacturer’s normal production voltage, current, temperature, and rotational limits.

The eFoil must use publicly released production firmware and software. Developer firmware, engineering firmware, custom firmware, modified firmware, altered motor maps, changed cutoff thresholds, modified battery-management programming, or unauthorized access to reserved battery capacity are not permitted.

Normal manufacturer-provided settings available to all owners through the standard controller or application may be used.

Publicly available production front wings, stabilizers, fuselages, masts, propellers, impellers, propeller guards, ducts, nozzles, boards, and other removable hydrodynamic components may be used. These components may be produced by the original eFoil manufacturer or by a third-party manufacturer.

Aftermarket propellers and foil components must be normal production products publicly available for purchase. Prototype, experimental, team-only, one-off, custom-machined, or specially modified components are not permitted in this category.

A commercially available adapter required to install a third-party propeller, foil, mast, fuselage, or other removable component is permitted, provided that it does not modify the motor, motor controller, electrical system, gear ratio, voltage, current limits, battery-management system, or firmware.

Propellers, wings, stabilizers, and other removable performance components may not be reshaped, trimmed, filled, drilled, specially polished, or otherwise custom modified for the attempt. Ordinary maintenance and replacement of worn components are permitted.

The attempt must begin with one battery charged normally to the manufacturer-indicated full-charge state using an approved charger. The battery may not be exchanged, externally charged, supplemented, or connected to another energy source during the attempt.

The attempt must take place in flat water without surfable ocean swell, breaking waves, boat wakes, meaningful river flow, significant tidal assistance, or another sustained environmental force capable of providing forward propulsion.

A sheltered lake, reservoir, protected basin, or similarly controlled body of water is preferred. Where minor wind or current exists, the attempt should use a closed course, repeated circuit, or approximately equal out-and-back route to reduce directional advantage.

The rider may adjust throttle normally for control, turning, safety, and efficiency. The motor must remain the source of forward propulsion whenever record distance is being accumulated.

Intentionally releasing the throttle to surf or glide on a wave, swell, wake, or current is prohibited. Intentional foil pumping to extend the distance traveled without motor power is prohibited.

Towing, paddling, sail assistance, handheld-wing assistance, kite assistance, physical assistance, drafting behind another rider or vessel, and intentionally riding a support vessel’s wake are prohibited.

A support vessel may accompany the rider for safety, navigation, documentation, hydration, and emergency assistance. It must remain far enough away that its wake or draft does not assist the eFoil.

The attempt must be documented with one continuous GPS recording showing the complete route, elapsed time, moving time, distance, and speed.

The submission must disclose the rider’s weight, water conditions, wind conditions, battery model, advertised battery capacity, motor, motor controller or ESC, firmware versions, propeller or impeller, propeller guard or duct, mast, fuselage, front wing, stabilizer, board, adapters, and all other material equipment used.

The battery state at the beginning and end of the attempt must be documented when that information is available.

The record is based only on the verified distance actually completed. Estimated remaining range or additional projected distance based on the finishing battery percentage is not included.

How This Got the Nod

This record is based on Daniel Escobar’s first-person report of a 52.36 km single-battery flat-water loop completed on a Waydoo EVO. The reported setup used a stock 2.3 kWh production battery with an aftermarket EfoilSolutions propeller and streamlined cone, which are permitted under the Strict Class rules as removable commercially available hydrodynamic components.
