The Monster-Sized Story
Red Bull's athlete profile says Nikolas Plytas made history by landing the world's first Double Backflip on a foil board after pouring six months into the trick. Surfer's May 23, 2025 report likewise says he stomped the first-ever double backflip on a foil and notes that the trick took more than 800 attempts according to the accompanying public claim. This is one of the clearest freestyle aerial milestones in modern board-based hydrofoiling outside the sitdown tradition.
Published references identify the feat as foilboarding / hydrofoil surfing rather than wing foiling or wake foiling. Available sources do not clearly state whether the successful attempt was fully wave-powered or used tow assistance to set up the ride. Forum questions asking this question were not answered. The feat is recorded under tow-in and freestyling as it appears to be done off an ocean wave and a driver was credited with helping.
Rules of the Beast
Counts the first double backflip completed on a foilboard when the public source identifies the rider, the completed landing, and the firstness claim.
How This Got the Nod
Red Bull carries the firstness claim, while Surfer provides independent coverage and context.
Video Proof From the Vault
