The Monster-Sized Story

The inaugural Sydney Northern Beaches Downwind Foil Race gave Australian downwind foiling a dedicated race-day benchmark. SUPboarder reported that the first running was held on 2024-02-04, that it was the biggest foil race in Australia to date, and that the forecast looked strong before race day delivered tricky conditions with about 10 knots of wind. The field still numbered 50 competitors, and James Casey eventually took the win. This is entered as a world first style regional milestone because the event formalized a downwind foil race on a public course with a large field and published results.

Rules of the Beast

This is a world first style Foiling Freaks listing. The feat must be publicly documented by an article, organizer post, rider post, film, video, or other credible source, and it must represent a notable first for downwind foiling as a distinct mission or route. The route must be completed on a hydrofoil board while using downwind energy, swell, bumps, or foil glide as a central part of the accomplishment. Support boats, safety escorts, and film crews are allowed unless the first specifically claims to be unassisted or unsupported. The first is not ranked by distance or time unless a separate record series is created. Race firsts should be organized events with a defined downwind foil race course, published results, and public reporting of the field or finish order.
